Getting back to nature and out of the school building is important for many educators and their students. A field trip to a local park or lake doesn’t have to be expensive. Yet it can be a huge learning experience. It can be a hands on project too, which many children respond to very well.

The first state park in Colorado is Lathrop State Park, and it is perfect for canoeing, hiking, identifying flora and fauna, and even a great picnic. They offer over 1,500 acres of land for recreational enjoyment. It is right along the Spanish Peaks in Southern Colorado. There are two lakes in this area that offer plenty of fun such as boating and for fishing.

Martin Lake is the location where water skiing, power boats, and sail boats can be used. This is also a great place for swimming due to the warm water in it. There is also Horseshoe Lake where those that want to peacefully canoe, go kayaking, or fishing for various species can occur. This includes bass, walleye, catfish, bluegill, and trout.

There are quite a few locations for camping at Lathrop state park too. Some of the locations are very basic. However, others have electrical outlets and they are close to bathrooms and showers. This allows you to set up the type of camping trip that you are interested in.

There is plenty of fun as well as learning that can go on around Lathrop State Park. It is a great place to take a group of kids for the day or for a few days to camp. You can set up special activities too such as a scavenger hunt to make it even more exciting for them. This is a type of learning environment that the kids will really respond well to. Have them collect certain items that they can share with the entire group.

You will find that there are going to be plenty of parent volunteers as well that want to help you out. That will make it possible for you to take along a large group of students. The fees for camping are very inexpensive too. You can also get group rates for education by calling them in advance. Many schools have low budgets for such outings, but this is really going to be more affordable than you think.

During certain times of the year they can also have educators come out such as from the Colorado Division of Wildlife. The goal is to help teach the children about preserving the habit, helping them to identify plants and animals in the area, and making sure they really get the most out of this type of field trip.

If you want to offer a great experience for students, consider such an outing. You do want to make sure the weather is going to be cooperative though. Students should bring clothing that they can layer for when it is cooler and warmer. They also need plenty of water to stay hydrated out there.
